One could also add a small amount of pearl mica to the clear coat to give it a subtle custom look.  That is what I have decided to do to my original color, code 14.  That way I don't have to worry to much about my door jams and truck lid underneath.

Some of the original colors look better when done with modern base coat clear coat paint then they did with the original lacquer. For example, I never liked the 69 Camaro Rally Green but saw one with fresh base coat clear coat paint and it looked great. The clear gives it that shinny wet look that the original lacquer didn't have.

I dunno about Spring Green being an ugly color.  Eyes of the beholder I suppose like anything else.  There was a very pretty 72 Spring Green Chevelle at the ACES/Mid America show in 2002 with a set of Torq Thrust II wheels and white stripes that really set the car off nicely.  I'm not usually into greens, but this one looked as good in person as it does in the photos.

Admitedly, I saw a 72 Heavy Chevy the same color at Tulsa the same year but it had the ugly (IMO) 72 factory wheels and it didn't look half as nice simply due to the wheels.  A nice set of TTII's would have done wonders for it.

The really nice thing about our hobby, you can choose what you like :*)

Don't get spring green, It looks good in pictures, but I've seen it in person and It looked terrible.  My chevelle was Sequoia green (darkest green on the chevelles), and It was beautiful.  It was the same as forest green in 1970.  Get that color, lol.  If It was me, I would paint the car black with white stripes, or blue with black stripes and black top.
