I always liked to time the engine by ear and that usually meant that the engine ran best at several more degrees advanced than what the specs called for. Just watch out you don't get it so far advanced that you get pinging when accellerating under load, or make it hard to start, and I have seen some overheat when too far advanced. There's a fine line you don't want to cross. It's like a cliff, get right up to the edge for the best view, but be careful not to go too far.

On the timing issue, if you're careful and don't get confused, you can change the wires on the distributor cap around to help get the distributor placed where you want it. Change one at a time.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Resulting questions HEI!

If I've got this right I can turn the housing back 180 degrees as long as I do the same with the rotor?

But one thing puzzles me a bit! I adjusted the advance to 10 by turning the dist housing,
nothing strange with that, but she's running a bit rough when idling.
Then I tried to adjust the advance it even further, all the way up to 16-18 and the
result almost freaked me out, The engine started to run extremely smooth & quiter, but at a bit higer rpm as a result,
and I got a MONSTER respons when I gave her some good gas. It felt like a completely
different engine, more like a european sports car feel, Immediate respons, quick, aggresive,
yet smooth (I dont know if this will change under load?).

Any comments to this?

Best regards
Pelle
