Larry, it seems you are not going back"stock" so my 2 cents is to go with a scattershield.  Don't know what you intend to do with the car, racing, touring or what, but it is cheap insurance.  If you have never had a clutch or pressure plate explode with a stock bell housing you can's imagine how you have to clean up after the fact. Not counting the damage to the car.   Had one explode and come thru the transmission tunnel and into the dash.  I was alot younger and did not have the $$ for a shield, but now I won't put a car together without one.  Since you have to buy a bell housing, why not get a scatter shield?

Anyone on the list have experience with the 621 in regards to tunnel clearance on a Chevelle? Chevelles in general, but specific to 66/67 would be better.

Thanks,
Larry

The 396 is externally balanced; the 621 bell housing is the one to use for a big clutch if you don’t see the need for a scattershield…yet.

Hey Larry, The bellhousing your looking for Im pretty sure is #3899621 thats for the large clutch (11.5"inch) and 168 tooth flywheel. I got one off e-bay a couple of months ago, but you might find a better deal at a swap. or used scatershield for budget reasons. Also I have maybe a silly  question is the 396 internaly or externaly balanced ? Jimmy.C
