Thanks for the tip about the trans tunnel. What I have heard about that is that if your body bushings are new it will clear but if they are sagging it may hit. At any rate, I will be sure to test-fit everything (including the driveshaft) and I will beat on the tranny tunnel if I need to.

Also I can't assume that the tranny in the car is any good, which is why I just want to replace it while the engine is out. Since I will be buying a new unit, I may as well get the one I want. I am looking forward to having that highway gear.

I remember hearing about a overdrive adapter to bolt to the tail shaft of your transmission, maybe a option to check out if that all you want is overdrive.good luck Eddie Bumgarner 66ss conv.

John to add to Dales comment.. I also have replaces a 3 speed in a 54
Chevelle and a Powerglide
in a 65 El Camino with TH700R4 OD transmissions. The 64 had new body mount
bushings and the Elky were not... But BOTH needed a small whack with a dead
blow hammer at the Servo area.
NO BIG deal.. REALLY.. Wham Wham and it's over..
I just jacked up the trans till it hit the area in question yanked it back
and forth to score the floor area, lowered it to gain access and SMACKED it
a few times.
