In effect what I was saying was; If he knows the motor is a 454 then it couldn't have been built before 1970. All the footnotes he referred to applied to 1968 and prior motors. The only assumption I made was that he knows its a 454.

You are right though, he needs to make sure the motor is indeed a 454. I've seen 454 stickers on more than one 396 at car shows.

http://www.mortec.com/ is a good place to check and see what engine you have.

Wouldn't it be more prudent to know what engine it is, so he wouldn't
have to assume (Ass) out of (you) and (me). grin

The 454 didn't appear until 1970.

I would say you should go with the 105 torque number.

I have IV Generation 454ci with a 2 bolt main. I'm going to pull the main caps to check the bearings. the chiltons says to torque them to 105ft.lbs then it has a foot note that if its a 1966-67 4 bolt its 115ftlbs, 1966-68 , 2 bolt-95 ftlbs. I am not sure what year the motor is, would it be safe to assume my motors main caps should be torqued to 105 ft lbs ? Jimmy C.
