 In Johns case  The button   pushes on the main leaver for the door latch. 40 
years of slamming heavy doors  with little or no weather stripping takes it's 
tole on the latch mechanism.    the door inside leave is pretty straight 
forward with some adjustment for the activating Rod.   I have seen bent 
stretched rods from   using a SLIM JIM to get in a locked car. especially if 
they had anti/theft door lock buttons.
