Of course I confine them. Imagine what they might get into if I didn't! In the past I had what I guess is called an expen (I bought the baby version from Kmart). I now baby gate them my two (1 year old) in my office. It's a small room - 9'x9' (9'x10'?) and it has basically just the computer desk and two filing cabinets.
