Hi, Marsha, thanks for writing back. (Angel says thank you.)

I wish (sometimes) that I had more chis, like you, but I guess it works well with just the one I have.

Well, the vet never told me she was overweight, so I just brought it up a few years ago. I told them that the breeder said she would probably weigh 4-5 pounds. The vet said - no way. Maybe about 11. I asked for guidance on how much to feed her per day, but they wouldn't say - they just told me not to cut her down too drastically so she wouldn't starve. What does that mean?

Then she got diagnosed with the thyroid thing, and we thought the thyroid pills might make her lose weight, but no.

So earlier this year after joining a list, I heard about the green bean, carrot, mixed vegetable thing. So I feed her 1/4 cup food twice per day with a (up to) 1/4 cup vegetable snack in the afternoon. I alternated green beans til the can was gone and then mixed vegetables. Back and forth. One week, I found bile (?) spots 4 times and so I worried and took the vegetables away. I then went strictly with carrots and she has done okay with them. (Also dh said he finally quit feeding her as much junk.)

So she has now started losing weight. I am finally hopeful for the first time. I would like her to live as long a life as possible and think the weight does not help that.

So, I see chis run in your family, haha. Tell me something about your chis and/or send pics. I'd love to know about them.

Marie

Hello and welcome! I am Marsha in KY and I am owned by 5 chis. Your Angel is adorable. She reminds me of my mom's chi who is also overweight like that. After many unsuccessful diet attempts, we finally took her to the vet to see if there was a health reason (like thyroid). Vet said she was perfectly healthy. His recommendation for diet, which has worked great!, was to cut back on the dog food, but allow her to eat all the green beans she wanted. He said the greenbeans would fill her up and contained NO calories. She eats several cans of green beans a week, lol

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Introduction

Hi, I am Marie and I just joined this group.

I have one chihuahua. Her name is Angel and Thursday was her 10th birthday.

I got Angel at 5 weeks and 5 days old from a byb. Who knew anything then? Now I do. She has some health problems but fortunately, her skin/eye/ear allergies was really the only thing she suffered from - from a few months of age.

Now she also has to take thyroid pills (for about the last 1-2 years) and has cataracts, although not too bad yet. She has luxating patellas in both back legs, but doesn't have any symptoms with that. Thank goodness.

Angel has been dieting for several years but nothing has worked until recently. She has lost 14 ounces in the last 3 1/2 months. Finally. Hopefully she will still lose several more pounds.

Angel is the love of my life. I am attaching a few pics.

We look forward to meeting yall. Maybe I already know some of you from other lists.
