This is exactly why my girls go out ONLY on a leash.  We have large hawks 
and owls in our area, and they are extremely bold.  My mere presence 
wouldn't stop them from stooping on my little chis.  They could drop right 
down on them and carry them off before I could do anything about it, even if 
I were nearby.  Even if I prevented a hawk from carrying off my wee girls, 
their claws or beak could *easily* deal a fatal wound to such tiny babies. 
So while I'd love to be able to let my chis run free in my fenced back yard, 
it's not in the cards.  Additionally, they're both hooverdogs and God alone 
knows what they'd find and eat.
