my mom has a chi that is extremely overweight. We took her to the vet and they did all kinds of test to see why she remained so overweight despite a strict diet ect. Test all come back that she was perfectly healthy, so vet recommended mom feed her a 1/4 cup of dog food and all the green beans she wanted (I assume he meant within reason, lol) He aid there were NO calories in greenbeans, but the water in them helped make them feel full.
