so sorry for your loss. i have had 2 dogs hit by a car in my life time of dog
ownership. one i found after the fact, and the other i watched get hit...
trust me, its a lot easier to find them passed away then to watch it happen.
(not that either is easy, but atleast you or your kids didnt witness it)
we live out in the country and it seems like that gives people a miss guided
idea that they can just let their dogs run loose... as i used to do... but it
only ends in sorrow. last thursday on my way to town, i was the killer. a big
lab mix came shooting out in front of me (going 55 miles an hour with babies in
the back seat) and swerving was not an option. this poor dog didnt just get
knicked, i went over him head on. i turned around as soon as it was safe to
and went back, only to find him still alive and dying slowly. it was awful, of
course i was too far from a vet to do any good, and the owner was nowhere to be
found. i stayed with him till he died, all the while his running buddy was a
little ways off, watching for his friend to get up and come along with him. i
bawled all day, it was just awful.
anyway, i'm not sure what the point of my story was...
but my advice is to give your family an appropriate amount of grieving time,
and then head to the shelter and adopt your new friend. also, take what you've
learned from this and apply to your next pet. there is a way to train your
pups not to bolt out the door, its really easy, much easier then teaching them
to go potty outside actually.

  blessings
  Heather

I just wanted to know if anyone ever lost a dog to being hit by a
car, or even worse,if anyone went looking for their missing dog,to be
the one to find him/her on the road? THis has been very
heartbreaking. I noticed Sugar was missing today, and knew she must
have slipped out the door and ran off. She had a bad habit of doing
that. We live in a culdisac and rent a house. I thought about buying
a radio fence thingy..but they're expensive,and so havn't done it
yet. Well, I found her,and she had already passed away. THis is not
the first dog I have ever had. We had quite a few,and i didn't like
any of them, but a german shepard...anyway this one was different. She
loved us and we all would fight over who got to sleep with her :) .
My son (10)kept asking to have the cats to slep with, since he
couldn't slee pwith Sugar tonight. He is really quiete, and I know hes
not happy, but he is doing a god job at hiding his feelings. My 4yr
old is angry with me(he has to be angry at someone),and I have been
crying since 8pm. I dont want people to feel sorry for me,I just
wanted to hear that others have gone though this, because I know many
people do ,but this is the first time for me. thanks for
reading.christine p.s.sugar would have been 2 this november. She was
5lbs,and would go potty outside. she went to the door to tell s when
she had to go. When we asked her, shed turn around in circle really
fast 2-3times,and run to the door. She slept with me&my husband,or my
10yr old. if the doorbell rang,or someone walked thru the door, she
would excessively bark. WHen the mailman drives by,she barks.
Tomorrow I wont know when the mailman comes.
