I just washed Tater Tot for the first time. He did fairly well. I think he'll
get used to it as long as it remains a pleasant experience. He was sooo happy
after his bath since the fleas are gone. I used Dawn and it worked great. I
won't use it continuiously because I don't want to strip all the natural oils
from his skin. Has anyone ever used Dawn for the first scrub down then a
secondary shampoo/conditioner for another wash n rinse cycle to condition the
coat. I didn't do it this time but I may need to if I have to continue this
process for awhile. Also has anyone ever given their chi fish oil capsules?
I've done it for my big dogs but am afraid to with him because he's sooo
little. Any suggestions would be great.

PS We have fleas really bad in our yard. I live on a 5 acre wooded lot.
Tater gets fleas everytime we take him out for a walk to to go potty. We're
working on potty training him inside so we can limit his exposure to the fleas.

The advertising jingle "dawn takes grease out of your way" is
actually a fact. Dawn is used by environmental agencies for a number of things
because of this. For instance, with oil spills, ducks are washed in dawn...it
takes the oil off. The same idea applies to the fleas...the slick nature of the
ingredients in dawn causes fleas to wash right off. It does NOT prevent fleas,
nor kill them...just causes them to fall off. However, I personally would not
want to use it long term on a regular basis. It is great for getting a flea
problem under control, but once under control, should only be used as needed.
Just as it "takes grease out of your way" it also takes oils off....needed oils.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Re: Bathing & Fleas
My daughters Chi had a severe allergic reaction to fleas (fleas
acted like a neurotoxin to the dog) and her vet put him on
amoxicillin and prednisone. Said to avoid problems with some of
the meds for fleas as they can also be neurotoxic, to just bathe
her Chi's once a week with Dawn dishsoap and now she has been
doing it and not had a problem since, so I started to bathe mine
with Dawn. I do not know why or the reasoning behind it but have
not had a flea problem so will continue since her dog had gotten
so sick. If anyone knows of this or knows how it works I would
love to know more.
Faithful to Dawn dishsoap now and my dogs are healthy.
