I agree. I don't know of any reputable breeder who got rich! We reckon 1 pup pays for the stud fee, one for the extra food, one for the vets fees so you're looking at three healthy pups needed to break even. In my breed, three or four is an average litter so if you keep a pup, you're losing money. And if you have a nightmare litter, then of course you're way out of pocket. Plus there's the missed matings etc. The only reason for breeding is to try to breed a better specimen of the breed.

As one who volunteers with a shelter, I couldn't agree with you more. After the things we see, anytime someone tells me they're a breeder, I just automatically assume they're a puppy mill. A backyard breeder isn't any different. A friend who had dobermans once told me that you breed to better the breed. She spent tons of money having her dogs tested for all the problems associated with dobermans before she bred them, and she only bred a couple of times over the years. With what she spent, she didn't make any money on those puppies.
