They should have a place that we can get discounted or free medical care for
our animals when things happen and we loose our jobs. Vets could take turns
volunteering. Most Vets also want all the money up front and do not even give
you a chance, it does not seem fair. I am thinking of getting insurance for my
dogs, but have also heard bad things about that too. I have known my Vet for 35
years and he is a friend of the family so I am lucky if something happens he
lets me pay over time or when I was a single mom did a few free things for me.
But I know those things do not happen often and when he retires I am going to
be sick!!

Merry Christmas to all!

Again my mothers dog was on Phenobarbitol for over ten years of her life.   Her
dog lived to be 17 years old.

Hi Christy,
No he hasn't been tested. The vet said it would cost several hundred dollars to
perform just the basic tests and financially that's not an option for me. I,
too, am one of those who lost their job. I know it's not fair to the dog to not
be able to afford the proper medical care, but I do give him the best food and
love.

I don't remember, has cooper been checked for a liver shunt?  I just had Keeper
checked for a round of seizures a couple weeks ago.  I know this is really
common in small dogs and maybe it could be fixed with a low protein diet and
some other meds.  Just an idea if he hasn't been checked out I would have a
Bile Acid test done and liver enzymes...

My aunt and uncle have a chi/spaniel mix that is on Phenobarbital.  I believe
they get the generic form of the drug at Wal-Mart pharmacy for 4.00.  You may
want to check Wal-Mart’s website to see if they have it listed on the list of
cheaper prescriptions.  Just a suggestion.

Sorry to hear about little Cooper.  My aunt says that their dog, Sugar, is a
completely different dog now that she’s on the meds.  She’s much happier and
more active and hasn’t had a seizure in months.

Hi all,

Well, Cooper's seizures are more frequent now. He had one yesterday afternoon,
this morning at 7 and again just a few minutes ago. He's still walking around
trying to get his bearing. He doesn't want to be held right now.

During this last seizure, he cried out twice as though he was hurting. This is
so hard.

Maybe it's time to start him on phenobarbitol. Do any of you know how much it
costs?

Carolyn
