Dolly had a few reactions (I think) and the vet said to give her an Desi ¼
of a Benadryl 3 x day for three days. After Dolly’s knee injury and the
shaking, I think that maybe she was just in pain at the site of the
injection. My vet tells all the small dog owners to do the Benadryl as a
precaution.

I take mine for walks, sometimes in their stroller places and lots of time
in the car for rides. I rather have them protected than to take the chance
and lose them to one of the diseases.

We have to give Rabies shots in NC also and have had outbreaks in wild
animals who come up close to homes. I don't think they need all the other
shots yearly cause my babies stay in the house mostly and we have strict
leash laws here for all pets. My other chis a few years ago had some
reactions to Rabies shots--vet said usually it is the protein base that
causes the reactions.

Boy Joan, this is way to strict and ridiculous! Under 3 months! They can't
get pregnant at that age!, So dumb and unnecessary. I wouldn't even let them
know that I owned a dog, much less register them, if I lived their.

Other laws here:

Here in NY all dogs have to have a rabies shot. But if you don't register
your dog for a town license they would never know that you have a dog to
begin with. If the dog bit some one and you don't have proof that he had the
rabies then you can receive a $100.00 fine.

Since I got Princess from the shelter, I have no choice but to renew her
license every year, and she is on the three year protocol with the rabies
and boosters. She had a mild reaction to the rabies shot last summer an I
don't want to give it to her anymore, but then I have to contend with the
town coming around and they won't go along with a letter from the Vet
either, since it is a state law that they have to have the shot every three
years.

Now with Gigi, she had seizures from the anesthesia from spaying, and I am
too afraid to give her a rabies shot. So the town doesn't know that I have
her, so I am safe. I figure that since she is estimated to be about 5-6 yrs
old, the odds are that some where along the line she probably did have a
rabies shot. Since most of the Vets really believe that they are immune for
life with just one shot and their hasn't been a case of dog rabies in over
20 yrs in NY, I am not going to worry about it. The same principle applies
to the Booster shots, and I am not giving them that shot any more either.
Unless their is an out break of a different strain of Parvo, then I would
would consider that shot.

In the City of North Las Vegas, all dogs are supposed to be spayed/neutered
before 3 months, unless you get a letter from your vet that it is too
dangerous to spay at 3 months…which my vet says because they are so small.
Then when I register them with the City, I have to have proof that they are
altered and their rabies shots. If you don’t alter your animal, you don’t
get the registration…and you get fined. The only way that you can have an
unaltered animal is if you are a breeder and you have to present your
information stating that you are. There are way too many animals in the
shelters here.

You won't find the ASPCA or the Humane Society and many others or Vets that
are affiliated with them advocating to wait 1 or 2 cycles before spaying,
the reason is that their are too many irresponsible dog owners who will have
their females escape and become pregnant, and too many owners will just keep
putting the spay off. That's the main reason why shelters and rescues, etc
make it a necessity to have them spayed so young....it's not the dogs
fault.....you just can't trust humans to be as responsible as they should be
for their pets. If it weren't so, the shelters wouldn't be so full all the
time and that's the way they look at it. I have to agree with them, it's
better then having more puppies PD because no one wants them. But for those
of us that are responsible we can choose to wait it out for the better
health of our dogs.

Yes Peggy you are so correct...after the second cycle is best and it
astounds me how many vets don't say a word about it...makes me a tad crazy!!

Your right Gloria, a lot of Vets don't tell you that. I found that out after
I had my girls done to. It is best to wait 2-3 months after a heat, so that
their system can balance itself out again. They will still go through some
changes, as the spaying does deplete the hormones, but not as severely. This
is another reason why good Vets are against spaying 3-6 month old puppies.
They should go through 1-2 heat cycles, wait 2 to 3 months and then get
spayed. That also prevents spay-incontinence. A lot of the Vets here are
now advocating that.

If the fact that she was in heat just a month ago has impacted her reaction
to being spayed, the Society and vets are doing a dis-service by not telling
people to wait if their female has had a recent heat. I am so sorry that
little one is having to go through this and you too. Sending healing glows.
