Here is my vet's reply about spaying: dogs can be spayed at any age. We do it as early as 4 months now because of the law. I am a strong believer in pre-op blood work. It lets you know how an animal's liver, kidneys and blood cell count are. All these things are very important to how an animal will handle anesthesia. Very few animals have trouble under anesthesia. Animals and humans can have allergic reactions to anesthesia and even have underlying heart lung or other vital organ disease which can results in death or other anesthetic complications. I believe that all patients should have that blood work done before surgery regardless of age but esp in older dogs.
