Dolly was puppy pad trained. The pet store told me to buy the puppy pads, and they were pretty convenient and Dolly learned very fast to use them with a minimum of potty mistakes. I would let her outside to play and she would potty out there – but if she was inside she would go to the puppy pad. When I was watching Mandy, Dolly learned from Mandy going out to go potty that was a good idea. It took her a while to go out every time…she still loved her puppy pads. During the day, Dolly will cry at the door to go out, and Desi has been doing that lately too (without Dolly). But, with my spinal issues and recovery from surgeries, nothing is better than the puppy pads. When I get tired in the afternoon and lay down, they both come in the bedroom with me, I close the door and if they have to potty when I am asleep, they use the puppy pads in the master bathroom. I have moved Desi’s gated area to the living room so that I can slowly put his gated area next to Dolly’s. When I go out, they each go to their ‘gated community’, and even Desi – after I was gone for 7 hours one day – did not go potty on the puppy pad, but waited and then went right out when I came home. Sometimes what I wanted seemed impossible. Now that I realized that he knows where he can go potty, he has been wanting to go out. Someone told me that dogs go through another maturity stage around two years old…and I hope it stays that way because it makes my life so much easier.

I am all for training them to use a litter box. You can line the box with newspaper, onto which you can sop a little of her urine, to leave a scent and tell her, here's the place to go. I trained Emiliano when he was 8 weeks old. I kept the box and his bed in an x pen (to which I had added plywood to make a floor) where I put him when I was going to be gone from the house. When I was at home, I would put him outside to do his business, after he ate, after his nap, when he first got up, and before he went to bed. I also watched for body language saying he had to go (when they're babies, that can be every 30 minutes or so). Once they learn to use the box, they will use it when you're gone and when the weather is too bad to go outside. Good luck. It’s Beneful, is that not a good food to give her? She seems to enjoy it. On special occasions (clipping her nails) I give her a bacon strip. I also give her these chicken sticks she chews on for hours. She loves her toys (she has a ton). As for her being somewhat aloof when drowned with attention, she’s still kind of like that but I know she loves us. Whenever she wants to get our attention, she stands on her two back legs and waves with both of her two front paws. I love it when she does that. She looks so cute. My son (he’s 16), acted annoyed when I first brought her home, well, now he’s her biggest fan. He can’t get enough of her. She follows him everywhere. She basically rules the house. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been that easy potty training her. She has yet to really get the hang of the puppy pads. Sometimes she goes on them and sometimes she doesn’t. Hi, my name is Naomi and I just bought me an adorable Chihuahua on May 9th. When I bought her the people said she was 9 weeks old. They bought her from someone else and decided that they couldn’t handle a puppy. It was a little weird when I went to see her because when I knocked they didn’t come out the front door, they came out from the side of the house just holding her with nothing else. No bed, toys, blanket, food and no shot records. They just handed her to me and took the money. I was a little suspicious but I wanted her so bad. I immediately took her to the vet and thank God she was checked out okay. She got her first set of shots and a nice warm bath on the same day. I have two questions for you “Chihuahua experts”. One, I drown her with affection constantly, hugging her, kissing her, scratching her tummy, but she seems kind of indifferent to me. She loves to play but the affection she acts like she could do without. Are all Chihuahuas like that? Also, she doesn’t eat very much. I serve her once in the morning and that’s it. It takes her the whole day into late night to finish that one bowl of food. And it’s not a big bowl of food. The bowl is very small so I would say less than ½ cup. Is this normal?
