Hi all!
This is my 3rd mill survivor that I have adopted. The other 2 are dachshunds.
This is a tiny guy and is coming from a Missouri puppy mill (that is closing
down!!!!!). He is a year old. Haven't met him yet but realize he will take some
special care.
Does anyone have any experience with puppy mill chihuahua survivors? And what
advice would you give to help ensure a good start?
How would I best accommodate him at home the first day with 3 dachshunds on
board?
What is the best POSITIVE approach on training one with so little human
interaction?
I want to make sure this is a smooth transition for him....well as smooth as it
can be....I know chihuahuas have their own independant attitudes and are very
intellegent. Having not lived with one before (except for a rescue and foster I
had for 10 days) and considering I have dachshunds (which are little loves and
very mellow for dachshunds...I know this breed well), I realize what worked for
them may not work for a chi.
I found advice on puppy mill dogs but don't agree completely with that...they
said to house the pm dog for 7 days away from the others for several days, then
move his crate into the main streem of the house so they can get used to all
the normal noises. I don't think they should be kept away from the others and
this might work for specific breeds but not the tiny ones as they need as much
human and family contact as possible.
I just don't want to screw up!!!! Any insight into the paticulars of chis would
be very helpful. How to guide them without igniting their stubborn streak, what
works best as far as potty training them, once a chihuahua starts to trust what
should I expect to see in them? How do I tell if they are actually fearful or
are being controlling, so many questions!!!! I just need a crash course I can
study... full of practical experience....a mentor so to speak! LOL!!!! ANY
advice is very welcome! :) Thank you all so very much!!!!!
(I pick him up the 27th or the 28th and I am so excitied !!!!! I want to be
sure I have everyTHING in place as well as my mind geared in the right
direction in order to understand what I observe.)
Renee
