Well Pam in order to not HAVE to you need the titers. a lot of folks can't afford to get them done, so in this case the HAVE is not overstating it at all.  Hard times abound for people all over the US right now.

Most places have those laws in place. HAVE to is over stating a bit..If your dog's titers show they do not need a rabies shot, then it is your personal choice to subject them to another rabies shot or not register them.  More and more people are choosing the latter.

here in california you HAVE to have the rabbies shot in order to get your dog legally licensed within the county. if your dog is not licensed you can get fined. you pay a yearly fine if you have the one year rabbie shot or if you have the 3 year then you pay every 3 years.

If you don't get your dog vaccinated with the rabies shot, since it is required by law, the vets will refuse to see your animal. a lot of them here won’t see the dog if you don’t stay updated on all vaccines

You are welcome! You should understand that some vets will not advise against the rabies shot because it is a federal law that all dogs be vaccinated yearly or every 3 yrs. A lot of vets don't want to be involved with the politics. So the decision is really up to an educated owner and like you said, each of us has to feel comfortable with our own decision.
 
The only shots that I personally may have to make a decision on is if the Parvo Virus changes it's strain, or for that matter if any virus changes it's strain and becomes prevalent. And also the doggy flu shot. The doggy flu vaccine hasn't been around long enough to have enough data on it's overall effect on dogs, like the other shots have been. We have had many outbreaks of it here on LI, NY and in the city, so that one is a little scary.

We do have a high incidence of heartworm disease here in SC apparently so I guess the preventative is a must, I'm sure my vet will advise against foregoing the shots but I must feel comfortable that I am making the right decision.

Hi Cindy,
It was me who posted all that info on vaccines. You can have a titer test done, but the odds are at 15 months old he has plenty of immunity for years to come. The titer test can be more expensive then the shots with some of these vets. So you may want to call around at different vets and get a price. They all use the same test, just that some vets make more of a profit on it.
 
I do not give yearly boosters anymore and I don't give rabies anymore. I will post the info again in the next email. Please save them as they are loaded with info and have links that you can click on for updates as each year passes.
 
IDEXX Fecal Ova and Parasites by Zin,  is a worm test. click  Worm Test   for explanation. You can google any of the abbreviations for test and shots and will always find info that explains what they are.
 
DA2PPv is the yearly 5 way booster for: Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Modified Live Virus
 
Whether you give a 1yr or a 5yr rabies shot is governed by your state/county laws. The virus and the dosage they give in the shot is exactly the same in both the 1yr and the 5yr and the exactly the same dosage is give to any size puppy and any size dog.
 
Cindy, bear in mind, who is going to know whether you give the rabies shot every year or not? The law doesn't come knocking on your door to ask, so for me personally, I don't worry about an old outdated law that says dogs have to be the shot every year or every five years, My dogs are done for life in my book. Princess had a bad reaction to the last rabies shot that she had. I never gave one to Gigi because it is too risky for her and the odds are that since she is going to be 8 yrs old she probably had at least one some where in her past life. Not only that, but there hasn't been a case of rabies anywhere in over 24 yrs.
 
So I would do the regular fecal worm test and do the Heart-worm test and the HW meds if you have that problem in your state, and I wouldn't worry about the other shots. JMO

Hi Everyone, My vet's office just sent a reminder that Cooper my 15 month old Chi is due for his vaccinations and parasite check. I can't remember who said something about having them check the levels to make sure that he really needs a booster. I don't take any meds myself, and I certainly don't want to give my dogs anything unnecessary or potentially harmful. The ones that he is due for are DA2PPv 1 year immunity, IDEXX Fecal Ova and Parasites by Zin, IDEXX Young Canine Maintenance Profile, and Rabies Canine 1 year Booster. My little Dali had a reaction to the rabies vaccine when she got it for the first time so I am concerned. What do you think? Thanks! Cindy
