Use a piece of (non-conducting) clear plastic tubing to sniff for the sound.
Alternately salvage the earpiece bits of an old stethoscope. Cut off the
metal diaphragm unit on the end and throw away the old tubing (it may be
conductive). Install new tubing and make a sound probe with a length of
plastic tubing.
