Hello Markus,

sounds veeeeery strange to me.

I do only know about PIN diodes working together with Szintillation 
materials.
The latter produce visible light when being hit by nuclear radiation.
This light is then being detected with the photodiode.

I never ever heard of direct use of photodiodes.

Remember, alpha-rays are he4-cores and beta rays are electrons.
Only gamma are actually photons and now, off the cuff, I do not 
understand how alpha and beta particles should produce this non-
energy related effect in the diode crystal.

Maybe you can try to contact the author of this article..

if it really works, it would be a real easy and simple radiation detector.
