There was a curious period in the 1950s when transistors were about and
their potential was becoming evident. The valve companies gambled on
research - and lost. It did spawn a set of valves with ever increasing
numbers of grids and screens. We had a radio from the period without one
triode, tetrode, or pentode in it, but all these curious combinations
and exotic designs. Five years later, the valves were beaten into high
voltage applications. The radio lasted into the 1980s without any
maintainance at all, so they were definitely good for something.
