I have encounter the same problem and it's definitely affecting my
ability to use Google Chrome on a daily basis.

I did not install any addition plugin for pdf, just what was
originally packed in Chrome (as shown in the "about:plugin" page)
    File name: nppdf32.dll
    Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape

I am using a laptop,
    CPU:  1.40 GHz, Intel Celeron M
    RAM: 760 MB
    OS:   Windows XP SP2

Not the best hardware, but never had problem loading pdf in Firefox.
Hope someone on the development team can solve this problem soon. This
is an essential feature for browser these days.
