I am having the same problem--thankfully, though, only occasionally-- CPU usage skyrockets and browser freezes. I have Adobe 8.1 and am running Windows XP SP2. However, in MOST cases opening pdf documents while using Chrome--Chrome, in my experience, has been MUCH faster in loading these documents than my previous browser (IE7). That is one of the major reasons I switched from IE7 to Chrome since I must download tons of pdf's for business reasons everyday. I just switched from the Beta to the Developer version, so maybe that will help.
