Yeah, the Bookmark Manager search box is a little hard to notice.  In
the development version, they have added a "Search" label next to the
box to make it clearer.

Ctrl+B is Always Show the Bookmarks Bar, which will make the bookmarks
bar open just below the address bar.  It should be more than 1 pixel
high because even if you have no toolbar bookmarks, it should have an
entry on the very right side that says "Other bookmarks", which is a
shortcut menu of all your bookmarks instead of using the Bookmark
Manager.
