You can use Chromium (that is not tested officially, unless you know any
open source testers that are willing to officially be the Chromium testers)
with no obligations. You cannot use Google Chrome (that has been tested) with
no 'obligations'.

Besides, you can look at the source code of the installer and of the updater
and see what they do, in order to secure yourself from any issues you should
worry about. Anything can be aborted, anything can be cancelled, when it is
open source.

You can get the nearest version to the Dev release (3.0.187.1), but it does
not have the fix for the menu crashes. It was resolved a few revisions
later, but maybe too much revisions later, so other stuff have also been
developing (fixes or bugs or crashes).
So, if it matters, here it is -
http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp/18035/
And this revision is after the menu crash fix (but includes a WebKit and a
V8 merge, for better or for worse) -
http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/chromium-rel-xp/18089/

I mean, you are not expecting the development to be stopped as soon as a
version comes out for testing, right? that would be a waste of time for
developers.

Good luck.
