Dear Ms Finnegan,

Thanks for your support - sending information to the List on new Churchill books is very much like sending messages in a bottle from a raft at sea . . . One never knows whether they will be read - let alone considered as welcome!

There is of course nothing uncommon in this harsh world about experiencing the presence of these "black dogs". The great difficulty is having the professional skills to speak competently about them. I do not know what depth of specialist psychological / psychiatric training is involved in the case of the author, "a Family Court Welfare Officer and Adviser" as described by the publishers :

Wilfred Attenborough is an independent scholar based in the UK who has been researching the evidential foundations of Winston Churchill's 'Black Dog' for several years. Before retirement in 2008 he was a Family Court Welfare Officer and Adviser.

In the field of fiction, you might enjoy "Mr Chartwell" by Rebecca Hunt (Penguin, 2011) - a great work of creative imagination based on the reality of WSC's recurring fits of depression.

With all best wishes,

A.C.

Dear Professor Capet:

I would definitely be interested in reading about Churchill, and his struggles
with the 'Black Dog' of depression.

I've dealt with that a lot in my own life; I even attempted suicide nearly seven years ago. It is of some comfort to know that a great man like Winston Churchill wrestled with depression for much of his life.

Thank you for the 'heads-up' about this book!

Sincerely yours,
(Ms.) Patricia Finnegan
