Ah, I guess Im just used to ubuntu.  I mostly just want this as a data server 
so its ability to not crash is my number one priority, Ill definitely read 
about upgrading though if you think itd be wise to.

I have a simple question while Ive got your attention.  I decided just to make 
the single login 'home' account as the account that other people can log into.  
So I set up a network drive on a windows machine which logs into my 'home' 
account.  I can create files and directories, however I can't seem to read them 
while logged into the 'home' account on OpenSolaris.  Whats weird is that when 
I set up the network drive on other Windows machines that also log into 'home', 
they can edit and create files.  

So why can't the OpenSolaris account logged in as 'home' edit files?

I have already performed
chmod 777 /storage/backup

and also the other chmod recommendation you gave me
