Personally, I'd stick with the "SVN" version.  What does "lot of time" mean?
Is 2.1 based off of a recent build from the devel version?

No, HV add's a lot of features, (i.e. OpenGL for this release, real-time audio/video recording on the timeline, etc. for this release) to his version, and a few patches from our version.

Please read "Why 2 versions of cinelerra?" at: http://cvs.cinelerra.org/about.php, along with http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3, "What you'll find here is...Today you'll probably find the cinelerra.org fork more useful.\n They allow certain parts of our..."

if you are really interested. I personally like to do a code comparison:

$ tar jxf cinelerra-2.{0,1}-src.tar.bz2
$ svn checkout svn://cvs.cinelerra.org/repos/cinelerra/trunk/hvirtual

Then using meld from http://meld.sourceforge.net/, I run:
$ meld cinelerra-2.0/ hvirtual/ cinelerra-2.1/

This will bring up a 3-pane window showing which files have changed between 2.0, SVN, and 2.1... Double clicking a file will show you the actual changes.
