Not related to cinelerra directly, but my opinion is this:

never never never get anything other than nvidia cards.

here is why i believe that:

1) nvidia has the best drivers, they are much more customizable than anyone
elses. Unlike ATI drivers that offer only the bare essentials (under *nix).

2) nvidia has the best support for non-windoze operating systems. You get
drivers for *unix (Linux, *BSD, so on and so forth), IBM OS/2 and eCom, BeOS
and others! Unlike ATI that has the worst drivers and only support their
windoze drivers.

3) nvidia releases regular driver updates and adds new features, they listen to
their community via their public forums and apply requested features to their
drivers. Sure, their drivers aren't open source (and anyone working for a
similar organization very well understands why) but who really cares, they are
superb drivers and they do their job. While ATI on the other hand realeases a
new version every few years, thus their drivers become so outdated they are
practicaly unusable.

4) nvidia's *nix drivers lack nothing compared to their windoze drivers! Unlike
ATI's were their *nix drivers are featureless.

5) when nvidia releases a new video card, they release a new driver to make
sure people can use it everywhere. Unlike ATI for example who releases several
cards per year and their drivers don't even support last years cards.

erm... did i just write all that?.. oh well...
