I've added following to our GuiBrainstorming page:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sparse Timeline

Make the timeline view 'sparse', that means the time on top is not continious anymore but 'boring' sequences get ommited and 'interesting' sequences get displayed, probably even stretched to cover at least a single thumbnail.

This needs an ui (menu or whatever) to turn this feature on and some selection which events the user is interested in (scene cuts, transistions begin/end/mids, keyframes (begin/mid), labels, ...)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

is that somewhere in the area what you mean?
Making something 'renderless' in Lumiera is quite pointless, Lumiera will render previews on demand. If there is no demand then nothing gets rendered, preview redners are also proxy/quality crippled to try to preserve fast response. When you close any viewer then you have no render (well in background it might prepare a few frames, but you dont have to care)
