You can converto to RawDV the files already captured.
Importing them in Kino will do.

You can also use ffmpeg 

        ffmpeg -i file.avi file.dv

but you might discover that your ffmpeg is packaged with no support for
some codecs.

Yes, you should.
Make sure dialog you get the right format filter in the Load dialog. 
That is the last but one text field. Click on the white arrow on the
right to open a dropdown menu.
Selecting * will show you all the files, any format. Or you can choose
the filter for the format you want (e.g.
[*.avi][*.mpg][*.m2v][*.m1v][*.mov])
