I'm working on a "stringed instruments identification" feature for some
of my sites. There's a very early draft of it at:
http://www.mandolin-player.com/instruments/mando-a-z.html
The finished one will be fully searchable and of course not restricted
to mandos and citterns and along with another project of mine (a
historical stringed instruments catalogue) should hopefully be a good
tool for answering this kind of questions.

Well of xourse, it *isn't* finished yet, but the data I have for the
English guittar is:
   +Scale: 418-452 mm
   +Strings: 10 (ocassionally 12)
   +Course: 6: (2 or 3 - 2 or 3 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1)
   +Frets: Fixed
   +Body: Lute shape
   +Top: Flat
   +Back: Flat
   +Bridge: Floating

+String gauges ... no idea, but there are others here who know much
more about the English guittar than I do.
