I have found that old style Dogal silver-on-silk wound mandolin basses 
work quite well - actually, mandola strings, but not the usual.

Harpsichord iron and brass wires do the trebles for me.

Another string which works well on the basses and has one loop ready 
made is a silver wound Spanish laud string.
