Hi, Myra,
In actuality, posting something to a list like this is much like
putting it in some sort of newsletter. This is a public forum and
anything posted here could conceivably be used as evidence (as can
private email) in a lawsuit. Not so very long ago, I headed litigation
against a (then) Fortune 200 company during which emails were
subpoenaed. (In our case, it proved embarassing more than harmful for
some, but it does go to show that correspondence is correspondence no
matter what the media.) I would advise anyone that if they want to
maintain privacy, that they not commit to words in any form that which
they seek to keep to themselves. In addition, I've had some concern in
the past about defamation (slander, libel) lawsuits being brought
against those on any list who name a person and then attribute a
specific eggregious act to them. The only good defense to defamtion is
absolute truth; very few of us have concrete proof of such.
This list is really not more "dangerous" than a private email, letter or
even phone call. Any could be held against one.
This is nothing new. My grandmother used to say, "if you don't have
something nice to say, don't say anything at all". This wasn't purely
about manners...<VBG>
