I have been lurking on this list for quite awhile and have learned quite a bit from
many of you. Now I have a problem I am hoping you can help me with. One of my girls
had a puppy (Annie) last December that became very ill at 3 weeks of age. Her breath
was really foul smelling too. My vet started her on Clavamox and 2 days later several
of her mother's front nipples began discharging bloody milk that had the same foul
smell as Annie's breath. So, the mother was put on Clavamox too and they both got
healthy again. Annie's littermate was always completely healthy. In February Annie
was spayed and had an inguinal hernia repaired. She was shipped to her new "family"
in March, checking out fine with the vets before and after the flight. Her new owner
mentioned that she vibrated her lower jaw quite often and we both thought it was from
teething. Her vet could find no reason for for the quivering jaw and found no health
problems. Her bad odor returned (I'm not sure if it was the same smell as when she
was sick at 3 weeks of age but it could be...) and in July she was taken to a
different vet for the quivering jaw and now some drooling. The new vet put her on
Clavamox and Prednisone and said her tonsils were very swollen. A couple weeks later
the vet did a tonsillectomy and she was getting better until she finished the
antibiotics, and then her throat became inflamed again. Now she is on some "super
antibiotic/steroid treatment" for a month but she isn't responding too well to the
treatment and the vet is talking about more surgery in a few weeks! If any of you
have any suggestions I could pass along to Annie's owners I would really appreciate
it. They live in San Jose, CA in case any of you know of a great vet in that area. I
am wondering if a more "holistic" approach would be a better idea than just another
bottle of antibiotics and more surgery. They have spent over $1000 in vet bills on
this throat problem already and it still isn't cured. For those of you that are
wondering, I did refund their money, even the shipping expenses. Sorry this is so
long.
