The jaw chattering/quivering is not seisures. They chatter their mouths due
to pain in the throat, that's all.
My friend with the Cavalier that has the throat ulcers uses a liquid gel
cleanser on the throat ulcers and it seems to sooth and cleans the mouth -
keeping the pain down to a minimum and making the breath fresher. This
seems to work really well. Unfortunately I don't know the name of it but
you can buy it over the counter at any drug store.
Also, her vet and she feels this is a virus and therefore antibiotics and
cortizones do not help. The virus might be a form of herpes symplex which
stays in the body FOREVER. Stress is what brings the condition to a head so
keeping the dog stress-free is VERY important. Could also be a form on
auto-immune difficiency so keeping the dog on a really good diet is
important and using such things to boost immunity would be helpful. I think
Marina Zacharias sells an immunity booster so that might be good to start
the dog on her supplement.
Also, my friend purchased Herpetrol (spelling? could be Herpatrol?) and you
can purchase it from the net. It's all natural and contains L-Lyssin
(spell?) and my friend says once she started her dog on all these things all
the ulcers but one disappeared and the one remaining is very small and not
open or inflammed as it's original state. She believes the gel wash is
vital in keeping it clean and the Herpetrol may play a role in helping to
keep the herpes virus (if in fact it really is a form of herpes?) under
control.
Vet doesn't think it's hereditary and talking to others with Cavaliers with
ulcers and breeding they have never seen this passed on to progeny - which
is great news! Another sign that says this is viral, right?
Hope this helps anyone and everyone with poor, dear Cavaliers with painful
throat ulcers. Proper research really should be done for the sake of our
Cavaliers. How can we get it done? UC Davis maybe?
