Hi All -
After the few posts I sent to the list yesterday morning, I went off line and spent
the rest
of my waking hours in front of the television. Part of the time was also spent making
telephone calls.
Phone service, cell and regular, was disrupted for most of the day...but now and
then a
call would go through. I have two good friends (some of you know them) who work in
the City,
plus others who live in the area...I was finally able to reach most of them. The one
who does
work in the WTC area, the one I was most worried about, I didn't reach until after 11
at
night.
In the NY metropolitan area, I understand that if you didn't have cable tv, for
most of
the day you could only get news from CBS. I kept switching channels all day and most
of the
night...but thank God for Cable!!!
Here in Virginia, of course, our local news is giving more coverage to the
situation at
the Pentagon, which, as I write this at 9:55 on Wednesday morning, is still on fire.
It is
expected that there will be no survivors from the Pentagon incident...and while the
number of
800 expected dead is a lot less than the thousands that are expected to be in New
York, it is
still a horrific, amazing number.
I'm sure all of you have seen the news (the BBC's cable station here was on all
day too,
so we've got an idea of what some of you are seeing...we also saw some of the other
European
news reports, but since I don't understand those languages, I don't know what you were
hearing) so I don't want to talk about all the ideas being bandied about, nor am I
going to
defend my country's intelligence system...except, of course, to say that I don't think
anyone
ever thought of terrorists hijacking multiple jumbo jets and crashing them into some
of the
most famous symbols of America............... hard to defend against something like
that.
We in this country are used to seeing war zone films and photos from everywhere in
the world
but here...the tv showed lower Manhattan looking for all the world as tho there'd been
a
nuclear bomb, except that people could walk.....we Americans never expected to see
anything
like that here. Maybe that's why our airport security has been so wishy- washy. I
can
assure you that it will not be like that any longer.
I hope that everyone who has friends or family who worked downtown or at the
Pentagon
winds up with happy endings......Terri, I saw the ships going Northward yesterday from
Norfolk
and said a prayer for all of the personnel. I will add your husband to my prayers.
Ironically...all international flights were deferred to Canada, but shortly after
that, I
understand Canada shut down all its airports, too...... some European countries
recalled
flights that were on the way to the States....very smart! Air travel in this country
will be
a mess for a few days yet--most airplanes are not where they are supposed to be, since
the FAA
ordered everything that was in the air to land at the nearest airport! Don't know
what on
earth the travellers will do, stranded as they are!
Almost all cultural and athletic events in this area have been cancelled...I think
the
National Football League is considering having no games this weekend. Makes you wonder
whether the scheduled dog shows will go on. Two of us on the list are judging this
weekend in
Pennsylvania...Marilyn (with a lovely entry of Cavaliers) on Saturday and yours truly
on
Sunday. Rumour has it that the shows will be cancelled. I can't believe that will
happen,
but it is always possible. And judges coming from across the country, like Marilyn,
might
find it difficult to get here. I'm only flying a short distance, and could always
drive if I
had to.....but if they're going to cancel the shows, I wish they'd let us know.
Yesterday was
the AKC's quarterly delegate's meeting, in Newark. I understand it was held, but that
there
were many absentees. Of course the Delegates who flew in from other parts of the
country
can't get home just yet.......
Yesterday was a horrible day...my eyes are burning from watching television for so
many
hours and from intermittent tears...
and the tv is on again today. However, today I will try to accomplish something.
` We hear the fighter planes that are the only things flying here....every once in
a
while, two of them fly over us. Our trains aren't running, either.....
    More later...
Peggy
