Dedrea, Actually, I am anything but well versed in genetics. Much of it escapes me. However, I have been interested in the genetics of coat color, starting with my first breed, dobermans, on to boxers and now Cavaliers. It's not necessary information in order to breed good dogs, but sometimes it's helpful, especially when it appears that certain physical characteristics are associated with colors. Or you prefer certain colors and want to breed for them. As far as books are concerned, Clarance Little's The Inheritance of Coat Color in Dogs, although old, is sort-of the bible. Also, someone else on this list said that John Evans book had a good section on coat color.
