Hi
I had a terrible experience with an overdose of Ivermectin. I
had my little girl get a horse wormer and ingest quite a bit of it. I
rushed her to the Vet and she had already gotten sick and thrown
some of it up. She didn't have seizures but the vet was surprised
she didn't and said it could be because sheh had gotten quite a bit
of it up. She did however lose her sight for about 4 days. I beat
myself up about that for a very long time and tell this to everyone I
come across that has horses and dogs. From that point on
nothing for horses is allowed to come into the house. It is kept in a
locked cabinet in the barn up high where little 4 legged guys can't
get at it.
The manufacturer says that it doesn't cause blindness or
seizures but when I called the ophthamologist he said yes it
definitly did and heh had seen numerous cases. My little one has
been checked eyes and bloodwork( to be sure there was no liver or
kidney involvement) and thankfully has had a full recovery. I still get
the shakes when I think of that day.
Just thought this was worth sharing. The ophthomologist
said it dosn't take much of a horse wormer cause it is so
concentrated to affect a dog especially a little one so we are
careful not to drop any on the bedding or ground when we are
worming our horses.
                        Joanne
