The amount of horse wormer type of ivermectin that is safe for dogs is a tiny dot about the size of the top of a sewing pin head. I am surprised that your dog didn't die if it ingested a lot of the horse wormer strength ivermectin. It probably got many, many times the proper dosage. An overdose of ivermectin or any wormer or drug will cause serious problems. It is the correct dose of ivermectin that I have never had any problems with.
You can kill things with overdosage of almost any drug. Even Tylenol is lethal at a certain level for humans and it can kill dogs. When I give ivermectin, I wear surgical gloves. Ivermectin can be absorbed through the skin. I still think that Ivermectin is safer, at the proper dosage, than either Interceptor or Sentinel. There will always be a few exceptions for any medication, but I have had no side effects in my dogs with Ivermectin and we have seen side effects with the others. You have to go with what gives the least problems as any medication will have a few patients that have adverse effects. One of my dogs cannot take penicillin. My daughter is allergic to sulfa drugs. My husband has a reaction to caffeine. There will always be some anecdotal stories about any drug.
