I am so opposed to puppy food that I have it written, several times, into my
contracts. I require that they at least try a raw diet (frozen and properly
formulated) but if that does not work, they must use one of the 10 top foods
rated by the Whole Dog Journal. In my information packet entitled "Random
Thoughts on Puppy Care" which obviously covers everything I can think of, I
have it highlighted at least 8 times in the 20 some pages....NO PUPPY
FOOD....EVER. Puppy food just has additional supplements that make the bones
grow faster than the body and can cause lots of problems down the line.
There have been many studies to substantiate the harmful effects of puppy
food. There was a Canadian study about 9 years ago that first brought this
to light. The greatest obstacle I have to overcome is the first visit to the
vet where he or she is trying to impress the new puppy owner and recommends
the proper food... for puppies. I then have to tell the new owner that their
vet does not know what he is talking about.
