It was determined by Pat Hastings an all round breeder/judge(tricks of the
trade seminar) that it caused far more problems because it exceeded the
amount of fat and protein a puppy needed to grow at a normal pace. It became
apparent that it was another strategy to market dog food to the consumer. If
I remember correctly, it caused puppies to grow faster than their structure
intended which resulted in knee, hip, etc problems not to mention over
weight because dogs aren't kept on farms or large enough protected yards to
burn the extra calories.
I have always fed my puppies adult food more frequently during the day when
weaning with goats milk diluted in a blender. Then they are fed adult food
through out their lives with the amount adjusted for age and activity level.
I supplement as treats with baby carrots, broccoli, chicken liver, asparagus
and cauliflower. Puppy food has the potential to put my dogs health at risk
and an additional cost to my budget that is not necessary. I choose not to
buy it and don't recommend it to my companion homes. You need to decide for
your self if you can live with the outcome. I think you can buy the tape and
book on the Trick of the Trade from AKC magazine and Dog Wise book service.
Good luck.

I need to hear from breeders and others on your feelings, experiences, and
any studies that have been done, on the use or non-use of commercial puppy
food on young Cavaliers.
