The dog food manufacturing companies depend on us dog owners for their existence. They have huge facilities where they continually test the products they sell. Scientists are employed who are far more proficient at preparing a top quality diet than anyone else I know. I think that a breeder or owner had better be very cautious in developing a diet of their own making as their dogs life and health depends on their ability to do so successful.
I have been a dog breeder since 1967 and have produced many litters. The first few years, I was learning what was the best diet for my pups. I have fed Iams kibble with a meat flavored sauce mixed in since about 1972. Puppies are weaned on Iams puppy food mixed with distilled water in the blender. As they grow, I use the blender less until the pups are able to eat it just softened with a bit of water. My Cavaliers are kept on the food for small breeds until about eight months of age. The greyhounds are kept on the food for small breeds until one year. At this time, they are switched to adult food with a bit of canned meat for added flavor This remains their diet until old when I usually switch to senior diets. I am happy to say that our dogs are robust and shiny enough to dive through concrete. Many of our greyhounds have lived well into their teens and our oldest Cavalier is still with us. She is eleven and, except for a bit of gray is as active and beautiful as ever.
