Thank you Cathy - you are right. I got worried and checked with Norton. They helped me reset my software to inform me of viruses, tell me which they are and request manual deletion. They also told me that the blankness of the e-mail was because I had set my software to 'automatic cleaning and deletion or repair', which does the job without further reference to the user. So now I now. Trouble is I have forgotten the name of the site I was given to get the help so can't repost it here for everyone else, but to make the changes you need to call up Norton settings from the Programmes menu and change the options to manual.
