Laura,
You bring up a valid point. People think they ARE being responsible when they
go to the newspaper to find a breed dog. They trust that the breeders in the
paper are professional and therefore know more than they do. Knowledge is the
key here. Possibly if local breeders (of whatever breed) made it a habit to
visit local schools when the students are studying animals and exhibit and
explain about all the knowledge that goes into breeding dogs. Also, setting up
information booths in malls or at local craftfairs or whatever. It is a sense
it is a war of information and disinformation. The puppy mills only want you to
know a little bit. Just enough to seperate large sums of money from the buyer.
The resulting heartaches are not their problem. Therefore the breed gets the
"bad rap" not the breeder. When I first became interested in Cavaliers I was
guided into researching about the breed. Not just "aren't they cute!" I've
come a long way in three years, but still can understand some of the
misconceptions the "average" person has about buying a dog. It all comes down
to education.
