Hi list,
As someone who has been in Boxers for 20 years and most recently in
Cavaliers, I can tell you that there is a huge variance in prices for "pet"
puppies. Does the fact that someone wants a Cavalier but does not have the
$1,500 or more to pay for a pet that they will spay or neuter mean that they
do not deserve such a lovely pet? If they choose another breed, they can
find a pet for a very reasonable price (under $1,000). I believe that the
higher prices for Cavaliers is due to a shortage, not that they are "better"
than other breeds. I recently talked to someone who had a 11-mo Golden
Retriever that she purchased from a pet show. Why? Because she had spent
several months trying to find a good breeder, didn't know how, breeders in
newspaper ads were all bad experiences for her (she had enough knowledge to
know whether puppies were being raised in good conditions) and ended up
making a impulsive purchase at a pet shop. Interestingly, this dog is a
very nice looking golden, has excellent temperament and has been healthy.
So, did she do worse buying at a pet show? Not necessarily. The point I'm
making here is that price or source isn't necessarily indicative of quality
and just because some of us can't come up with the huge costs of some of the
more "rare" breeds, doesn't mean that we are undeserving people that can't
give our dogs good homes.
