Dave, just finding stud that you can (and want to) use is a real problem.
The gene pool in the US is a lot like the liberal BIAS in the three major
networks. If you don't go with the prevailing way of doing things, you are
blackballed. (I'm looking forward to reading Bernie Goldberg's new book on
the news media, but no time until after finals next week.)
There are several tabus that come into play. These are restricted papers on
puppies, high prices and lots of strings for show puppies, and a "people
like us" attitude that is almost paranoid at times that is used to make it
as difficult as possible to get access to good dogs and to purchase a decent
puppy with breeding rights.

There are more, but these are the first ones that come to mind. I'm sure
that you can add to the list. Basically, all this makes breeders import
their dogs rather than try to work with the gene pool that we have in the
US. As far as high stud fees are concerned, as long as the access of studs
is severely limited as it is, there will be people willing to pay. It is
usually a case of pay or not breed at all.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
