> Laura, > How many litters? > How many puppies? I counted and there were approx. 200 puppies, plus the few I purchased--maybe 210 total since 1976. Close to 80% were checked for patellar luxation by my vet (the ones I owned) or the owner's vet and of those only 4 developed patellar luxation that I knew about or had it checked on my annual check-up form--only one needed surgery. All that lived past age 10 developed MVD at some point. Never notified of a single case of epilepsy. About 80 or so of those had their eyes checked by an ophthalmologist at least once with 1 having geographic retinal dysplasia and 2 with folds--quite a few whole litters were checked. Never notified about a single case of juvenile cataracts. About 50 had their hips either prelim'd or permanently done through OFA with one diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia in one hip past age 2. About 30 were permanently done as the other 20 were removed from my breeding program due to different reasons--mostly because they weren't turning out like I wanted--lots were quite nice but just kept on growing!--especially Prudence's kids and grand-kids. Another 10 or so owned by others were xrayed for my benefit and reported to me, but not one of these remembered to have the xray labeled to send to OFA so I won't count them. I always tell everyone who buys a puppy from me that I greatly appreciate any testing they do and to please send me a copy. Of course each gets my annual checkup letter that I ask to get filled out every year and send back to me.
I know there are almost certainly others I don't know about. But only 1 officially diagnosed with hip dysplasia with about 50 OFA checked is only 2%--etc. Enough to get a fairly good idea of what is happening in my breeding program. All that just because I was listing problems by percentages in comparison to how many developed syringohydromyelia to put it into perspective. At least I've given some more to gossip about!!
