<<<< The eye drops are a bit annoying for the dogs, but I wouldn't call it invasive. >>>..I didn't call it invasive - I said it wasn't simple.
<<<<"almost everywhere" is surely innacurate these days.>>> Perhaps in the USA I would also like to remind people that regular clinics only started here in Sydney 1997 and are still not a regular occurrence in other parts of Australia. Only one or two people that I know of did any or extensive testing before then - mostly just their local vet gave the dogs a general examination. This was considered perfectly acceptable in those days - I'm talking 15-20-25 years ago. So we are dealing with short histories of health testing. If one x-rayed hips, one was considered quite extreme and fanatical. Incidentally 2 of my first dogs were done - Ch McGoogans May Fly and Ch Homerbrent Tom Tom, both Excellent - long before the current scoring system. Much before the late 1990s its only patchy results, and feedback from puppy buyers. and what one was able to glean from the original breeders, some of whom had little or no genetic knowledge to speak of. My first Cavalier came from a breeder who told me I must not worm it before it was 12 weeks old. I took him home at 8 weeks, dosed him immediately and he passed worms for 2 days. (This dog had slipping patellas, a wonderful French front and the most glorious plumed curled tail - he did not play any part in my breeding program needless to say!!!) Another breeder was convinced that you could have a wholecolour from 2 particolours. Makes one wonder how much of the health problems were due not only to a genetic predisposition but to bad rearing and management practices. It is interesting just how much attitudes and education have changed, I am sure for the benefit of the breed .
